SOUK Studio FAQs

  • What Is SOUK?

SOUK is a contemporary yoga studio in New York City that fosters connections through the practice of yoga, storytelling, music, and sweat.

Our yoga classes are accessible to all levels of practitioners, drawing from ancient teachings as they pragmatically relate to life today.

  • Where Does the Name SOUK Come From?

“SOUK” has Middle Eastern origins, referring to a place where people can put aside their differences to exchange goods and information.

In Sanskrit (the language of yoga), “sukh” is known as a place centered in joy and ease of being.

With those origins, our founders chose the name “SOUK” to convey how our NYC yoga studio is a space of welcoming exchange where practitioners of yoga can feel seen and grounded; get re-energized and inspired.

  • Who Founded SOUK Yoga Studio?

Rima Rabbath, Monica Jaggi, and a team of women who are yoga practitioners established SOUK Studio in NYC. Our founders are not just passionate about yoga; they are also leaders in brand management, architecture, and finance.

  • Where Is SOUK Yoga Studio Located?

SOUK is located at 12 West 27 Street, 2nd Floor (between Broadway & 6th Avenue) in the heart of the Flatiron/NoMad neighborhood in NYC.

This area is often referred to as the “Sweat Corridor” due to the many boutique fitness studios based here.

    • Jivamukti Yoga

    • Vinyasa Yoga

All of our yoga classes are taught by seasoned teachers from Manhattan studios who closed their doors during the pandemic (Jivamukti Yoga, The Shala, Laughing Lotus, etc.).

  • Do You Have Yoga Mats?

Yes. We provide Lululemon mats and Manduka mats for every yoga class.

  • What Can I Expect from an Intro Yoga Class?

Expect greater understanding of your body in a posture, which will allow you to experience increased confidence and courage.

Focused on foundational poses, proper alignment, and core breathing techniques, our intro yoga moves at a comfortable pace, with plenty of guidance and modifications to fit individual needs.

  • What If I’m New to Yoga?

New is awesome. Starting where you are is the best life advice!

As one great teacher (Shunryu Suzuki) wrote once:

If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind, there are few.

We recommend SOUK Align & Flow (Iyengar Yoga) and SOUK Start: Jivamukti Yoga Basics if you’re new to yoga. These options cover some yoga fundamentals, making an ideal place to start building a strong yoga foundation for your practice.

Here’s our schedule of SOUK Align & Flow and SOUK Flow classes.

  • Do You Play Music in Yoga Classes?

Most classes at SOUK incorporate music. Our yoga studio features a club-level sound system installed by Eleven Audio Design, which will rock your world!

The music our teachers play in class never compromises the teacher’s voice or instructions. Instead:

    • You will hear tunes from a wide range of bands and artists — electronic, rock and roll, indie, pop, hip hop, and devotional music — rather than “elevator” or background music.
    • The music is meant to enhance your experience and yoga practice, rather than be distracting.
  • Can I Bring a Friend to SOUK Yoga Class?

Yes, please do! We love it when friends practice yoga together. SOUK is proud to make yoga accessible and approachable to all.

The power of a collective practice inevitably lingers long after the yoga class. Moreover, you can experience hands-on assists through the power of touch.

Of course, you may not be able to make it in person all of the time. In that case, SOUK offers many live-streamed yoga classes via Zoom, so we can certainly beam you in from anywhere to join our practice!
