Barbara Verrochi has co-owned The Shala Yoga in New York City with Kristin Leigh since 2002. A pioneer in the Yoga world of NYC, Barbara has been an educator since 1986, Barbara taught art, physical education, and yoga in NYC public schools until 2000. She has served as a curriculum consultant, writer, project manager, and training supervisor for yoga and mindfulness programs in public schools since 1997. Barbara now co-directs Set/Reset, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting community-wide wellness in public schools, and teaches the Yoga Minor at Long Island University. Barbara began studying yoga in 1990. She is an ongoing, enthusiastic student of many brilliant teachers within the studies and practices of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga, chanting, Buddhist meditation, and anatomy. She lives in Brooklyn with her beautiful son, Workneh.
Kristin Leigh has co-owned The Shala with Barbara Verrochi since 2002. Currently, Kristin teaches and co-teaches vinyasa and Mysore Ashtanga classes and leads weekly Lovingkindness meditations. She co-directs and co-teaches The Shala’s 200 and 300-hour teacher training and mentorship programs. Kristin began practicing Iyengar yoga in San Francisco in the mid-1980s, and by 1992 found Jivamukti in New York City, where she was certified by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1998. She practiced with Eddie Stern for many years and made periodic visits to India to study ashtanga yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and R. Sharath Jois. She studies anatomy, meditation, chanting, and philosophy, and always will. A student of movement in its many expressions, Kristin is passionate about african dance and has been dancing with Pat Hall and Ronald K. Brown for over 20 years. She is forever grateful to her teachers. Kristin works with children at her son’s school, where she has guided the after-school program for over six years. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and son and Roxy the pup.

Our beloved old-school Shala vinyasa classes emphasize the breath-movement connection and intelligent, creative sequencing. All major categories of postures are included for a strong, steady, well-rounded practice. Taught monthly by co-directors of The Shala, Barbara Verrochi or Kristin Leigh.
