Juan Sierra is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher and a Mentor for Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Trainings Global. Juan was born in Peru and raised in New York City, where he came to Yoga through a friend and within the frenetic pace here, found this to be the turning point in his life. For Juan his practice is the embodiment of the peeling away of the layers of avidya (illusion, ignorance) and always to find compassion for all beings. His classes are filled with “crisp” humor and endearing humility, combined with skillful hands-on assists and a thoughtful choice of music.
Juan offers a witty yet challenging practice that strives to inspire and empower: giving students tools to consciousness development and the ability to balance the challenges of everyday life. He is currently living in Berlin, and as a visiting teacher at SOUK NYC, we see him in his home city often. Juan is eternally grateful to his Teachers who have influenced him: David Swenson, Sharon Gannon, David Life, and his mentor, Rima Rani Rabbath.

ASSIST WORKSHOP: TWIST ASSISTS In this 3hr Yoga Assist workshop, we will go through Principles of Hands-On-Assists in Twist Assists. Practitioners receive tremendous benefit from effective hands-on assists that navigates them to discover proper alignment and the deepest possible expression of a pose. Skillful, mindful, conscious assists are a powerful way to deepen a practitioners physical experience of an asana while sharpening their personal awareness. This workshop is for both teachers and practitioners who would like to deepen their understanding in the principles of safe and effective hands-on-assists and deepen their understanding of energetic lines. Class will begin with an energetic warm up that will activate the postures covered for the workshop. Through partner work we will learn the essentials of giving and receiving assists, explore how to support others while improving our own practice in the process. In the workshop we will cover how to use body mechanics to offer effective assists. In addition, we will use props (blocks and belts) as part of assists. Please bring a pen and paper to take notes. See you on the floor. “Conscious breathing is essential in any asana practice. In twisting, breathing also functions to increase and decrease internal pressure while the internal organs are in a twisted position. This has the effect of “wringing out” the internal organs by both the twisting action and the changing pressure of the breath. Actually, a wet washcloth is a good way to think about it. If we want to wring out the water in a washcloth, we must hold one end so that it doesn’t twist and then twist the other end against it. If we let go of the fixed end of the cloth (like the seat) we lose the twist.
